Turning 75? A guide to your Medicare health assessment

Turning 75 brings a lesser-known entitlement: a yearly health check designed for older Australians and supported by Medicare.

It's one of the most useful preventive tools available to you, but many people haven't heard of it. If you or someone you love is turning 75 or older, here's what the assessment involves and how to book one at Kilmore Village Medical.

What is the 75+ health assessment?

It's a structured check-up that looks at your overall health, physical function, and psychological and social wellbeing, not just a single condition. It's sometimes called the older person's health assessment.

Once you turn 75, it's available every 12 months, whether or not you have an existing health condition. The idea is to pick up small issues early and help you keep living independently for longer.

What happens at a 75+ health check?

It's a longer appointment with your GP, often supported by our practice nurse, covering:

  • Medical history and medicines: including a review to reduce the risk of medicines that don't mix well
  • How you're getting around: mobility, balance, falls risk, continence, hearing and vision
  • Memory and thinking: a simple check for early changes
  • Mood and wellbeing: a chance to raise any concerns
  • Support at home: your living situation, safety at home and available support

Is it bulk billed?

Yes. At Kilmore Village Medical, health assessments are bulk billed for Medicare-eligible patients.

How often can I have one?

Once every 12 months, for as many years as you like. Your GP will let you know when you're next due.

What happens after your assessment?

If your GP finds something worth following up, they'll talk you through next steps. This might include:

  • A referral to a specialist, physiotherapist or other allied health professional
  • A care plan if you have an ongoing condition
  • Immunisations or screening tests that are due
  • Practical advice on falls prevention or home safety

When to see your GP sooner

You don't need to wait for your yearly assessment if something's worrying you. Book an appointment if:

  • You've noticed a change in your memory, mood or mobility
  • You've had a fall, or feel unsteady on your feet
  • You're taking several medicines and aren't sure they're all still needed
  • You simply haven't had a check-up in a while
