What does bulk billing mean?
When your visit is bulk billed, we claim the Medicare rebate directly, so you don't pay anything out of pocket for your GP consultation and there's nothing to claim yourself.
Who is bulk billed?
GP consultations are bulk billed for Medicare-eligible patients, 7 days a week. That includes care plans, mental health treatment plans, health assessments and telehealth consults. Bring your Medicare card, and any concession cards, to every appointment so we can bill correctly.
When can a fee apply?
Medicare rules allow a fee for some services, even at a bulk billing clinic:
- Skin procedures: biopsies, excisions and similar procedures have a procedure fee. Where the procedure has a Medicare item, Medicare pays the rebate back to you.
- Private treatments: such as mole mapping and wart or skin tag removal.
- Iron infusions: a private fee of $180 applies.
- No Medicare card: patients without a valid Medicare card pay a private fee.
We always explain the cost and ask for your consent before any service that has a fee. You can see the details on our bulk billing page and in Find a service.
How do Medicare rebates work?
Where you pay a fee for a service that has a Medicare item, Medicare refunds the rebate. If your bank details are registered with Medicare, it usually comes through quickly. The rebate amount is set by the Medicare Benefits Schedule, not by the clinic.
